Summary
Retta Parker Stevenson will share her experience working with youth on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and highlight key struggles faced due to the negative impact of historical trauma. She will discuss observations made while providing art therapy, as well as the tribe's efforts to restore significant cultural traditions. Participants will be engaged in discussion about how these observations extend to their art therapy practice. Workshop attendees will experience an art directive as a metaphor for the process of restoring cultural identity.
Who Should Attend?
Mental health professionals including Art Therapists, LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs. Eligible licensed or credentialed clinicians can earn 2CEUs.
CEU Learning Objectives:
Increase understanding of the long-term impact of cultural trauma
Discuss connection between resiliency and resourcefulness
Identify the importance of ritual, community, and the arts for healing and restoration
Course Credit: 2 CEUs
This is equivalent to 2 hours of instructional time.
Fee: $10 for members, $15 for non-members
The Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for ATRs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
The course completion certificate will be awarded to registered attendees who completed the full two hour course at the end of the meeting.
About Retta Parker Stevenson Retta is a Registered and Board Certified Art Therapist and Associate Professional Clinical Counselor. She obtained her Masters of Science in Counseling and Art Therapy from Avila University in 2009 and has provided art therapy services ever since for diverse populations across Missouri, Arizona, New Jersey, Oregon and California. Retta has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings with clients presenting concerns from trauma to dual diagnosis, eating disorders, severe mental illness and more. While building clinical hours, Retta had the opportunity to work on the San Carlos Apache reservation and also presented "Supporting a Healthy Cultural Identity Through Art" at the Tribal Wellness and Awareness Conference in Arizona. Retta is currently the Supervisory Activity Coordinator at Alpine Special Treatment Center, where she provides oversight, management, staff supervision, individual and group therapy to clients with severe mental illnesses.
