Summary
The goal of this 3 hour workshop is to identify how therapists have dealt with disasters previously in terms of self-care and prevention of burnout and to learn new self-care skills and techniques in mindfulness. The presentation will start with a brief PowerPoint, followed by addressing the current pandemic and how the 5 art therapists have dealt with the transitions of the workspace, life changing situations and managed self-care and mindfulness. The goal is also to highlight how community and connectedness among the 5 art therapists and art making has helped during the pandemic and how other therapists can recreate and/or establish their own groups and gain insight and support during disasters or uncertain times. The last part of the workshop will be the facilitation of an experiential art experience in which participants will choose any art work from the show and dialogue with it in a response art piece.
Experiential Component
How can engaging in a dialogue with a piece of art promote self-care? In this experiential, the featured artists from "Transitions," the online art exhibit presented by SoCalATA, will guide participants through such an interactive process. In this time of extended social distancing, the dialogue can safely commence between respondent and art visible online. The respondent can choose to engage with an original art piece from the show or a subsequent community artist entry from the "call for work" portion of the exhibit. Respondents will be encouraged to consider their personal reaction to a work, calling upon their thoughts and feelings. Participants in this workshop can use any materials they have on hand from pen and paper to any other varied media to create the art response. Just as there is no wrong way to think or feel in response to the art, all responses have value for the creator themselves. Tensions can be released, emotions discovered and insights made all in the name of helpful reflection and self-care.
