What's My Role? Examining Therapeutic Practice and Social Justice Through Cultural Humility in Art Therapy
Presented by Louvenia C. Jackson, PhD, LMFT, ATR-BC
This workshop will focus on defining the role of an art therapist regarding issues of clinical practice and social justice and explore how an art therapist holds therapeutic space with both their roles as a clinician and an advocate for social justice. The workshop will include experiential components related to defining/ dismantling boundaries, separating and/or integrating social justice to achieve equitable art therapeutic practice. The workshop will also focus on how to engage in social justice work and have it be sustainable.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the four principles of cultural humility as a strength- based approach to enact equity amongst diverse populations served in art therapy.
- Participants will be able to explore three areas of self-concepts brought into clinical practice through critical self-reflective art piece.
- Participants will be able to examine three aspects of equity in social/cultural constructs within the clinical practice of art as an integrated experience that can acknowledge other ways of knowing and address issues of equality
Experiential Component:
The art experiential will assist participants on how to manage hurt, high anxiety, and trauma exhibited by practitioners and consumers through self-care art piece. It will be used to offer points of reflection, as well as critical examination through participant dialogue.
Louvenia Jackson, Ph.D., LMFT, ATR-BC is an assistant professor at Loyola Marymount University Graduate Department of Marital Family Therapy with Specialized Training in Art Therapy. She received her MFT and Ph.D. from Notre Dame de Namur University Art Therapy Psychology Department. Her work on cultural humility in art therapy education has earned her the May 2016 Outstanding Service Award from NDNU’s Art Therapy Psychology Department Ph.D. Program, the American Art Therapy Association’s 2016 Pearlie Roberson Scholarship, and the 2020 Loyola Marymount University Ascending Scholar Award. In addition to other publications Dr. Jackson recently released her first authored book, Cultural Humility in Art Therapy: The Balance of Creativity, Introspection, and Advocacy (2020). She serves on the American Art Therapy Association Board of Directors and currently focuses on community-based art therapy practice and research in addressing social justice considerations in art therapy education.
Who Should Attend?
The workshop is open to anyone who provides clinical work that is comfortable making and exploring their own images, biases and strengths. Art Therapists, LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs are eligible to earn CEUs.
The presentation will begin promptly at 1:00pm and end at 3:00pm. Participants are asked to join between 12:45-1:00pm to sign in for their CEUs.
The Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for ATRs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
The course completion certificate will be awarded to registered attendees who completed the entire course at the end of the meeting, filled out the CEU evaluation and registered for CEUs.
About SoCalATA (CAMFT Approved Provider #77619):
The Southern California Art Therapy Association (SoCalATA) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for Art Therapists, LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs. SoCalATA maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.
