"Group Art Therapy with Immigrant Communities in Los Angeles"

Presenter: Ruth Xilomen Rios, LMFT, ATR-BC

Brief Introduction: Ruth Xilomen Rios features a case presentation on group art therapy with the immigrant community. She will be sharing ideas regarding art interventions, addressing critical issues faced by this population, and distributing practical resources aimed at protecting immigrant rights.

Summary

This CEU workshop features case presentations on group art therapy with immigrant communities. Ruth Xilomen Rios will share ideas regarding art interventions and address critical issues faced by this population. Given the current affairs, she will provide an informational session on legislature impacting immigrant communities in California and distribute practical resources aimed at protecting immigrant rights.


Ruth Xilomen Rios has prepared a group art directive to accompany the closing reception of SoCalATA’s art exhibition at Greenly Art Space, All Are Welcome: The Art of Connection. She invites you to participate in creating a collective artwork inspired by her training as a stained glass painter.

Who Should Attend?

Mental health professionals including Art Therapists, LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs. Eligible licensed or credentialed clinicians can earn 2CEUs.

CEU Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to comprehend two legal issues currently impacting the immigrant population in California.
  • Attendees will learn three art directives that can be used with immigrant clients in groups or individual treatment. 
  • Attendees will be able to identify four stressors faced by immigrant communities.

Course Credit: 2 CEUs

This is equivalent to 2 hours of instructional time.

Registration and networking begins at 12:30pm. The presentation will begin promptly at 1:00pm and ends at 3:00pm. Feel free to come to the gallery early and view the 2017 SoCalATA Art Exhibition!

The Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for ATRs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

The course completion certificate will be awarded to registered attendees who completed the full two hour course at the end of the meeting.

About Ruth Xilomen Rios: Ruth Xilomen Rios is an Artist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Board Certified Art Therapist. In 2014, she earned her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design. In 2006, she earned her Master’s Degree in Marital and Family Therapy and Clinical Art Therapy from Loyola Marymount University. As an Art Therapist, she specializes in trauma with children and immigrant communities. Her artwork reveals personal histories of mixed heritage, a commitment to social practice, and an interest in the role of art in research.

Currently, she works as an Art Therapist with the Share and Care program through Cedars-Sinai’s Psychological Trauma Center. She provides art therapy supervision as Part-Time Faculty at Loyola Marymount University and serves as Chair of LMU’s Active Cultural Explorations Committee. She also sits on the Art Therapy Credentials Board as Board Director. She sees clients in private practice in Pasadena and makes art in her home studio in South Gate.
